Townsends was established in 1895 by John Albert Townsend in Cambridge. He made his own brand of "Light Blue Bicycles" in the workshops in Norfolk Street. After the Great War, the original production of Light Blues ceased and Townsends evolved into retailers of other leading brands. Many locals may recall the Townsends shop in Burleigh Street in the 1960s and 70s as being a popular mix of bicycles and toys.
In the 1990s, Townsends purchased the old established Ison's Cycles (Established 1893) and re-focused back to the bicycle business with the opening of Townsends Light Blue Cycle Centre.
After nearly 122 years of servicing Cyclists in Cambridge, Townsends Light Blue Cycle Centre now offers a complete range of bicycles from Children's "pedal-less" balance bikes right through to carbon fibre road racers, and of course, everything in between.
Keeping the choice wide, Townsends offer leading brands including Pashley, Ridgeback, Genesis, Scott, Bianchi, Surly, Salsa, Raleigh and their own brand of Light Blue Bikes.
Townsends also carry an extensive range of parts and accessories, and have full workshop facilities on site to cope with all type of bicycle requirements.A recently introduced price promise means that Townsends will price match all officially approved dealers, even including on-line websites for "in-stock" or "readily available" bikes.
All of Townsends bicycles are built and checked in a "ready to ride" condition, and include a free service after one month.
