Covid-19 Update (3rd November 2020)

With reference to the Government’s New National Restrictions (November 2020 Lockdown), we will continue to remain open, following Government guidelines which are in place for the safety of all customers and staff.

· We are currently operating under our normal opening hours, 8.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday. We will continue to be closed Sundays and Bank Holidays.

· We will constantly be reviewing the operational aspects of the shop and will update here accordingly.

· Our entrance doors are locked and will be opened for our customers as required:

for workshop drop-offs we ask that you use the side door on Ferry Path.

for access to the shop please use the front door.

· We are here to help, but please try to minimise any visits. We have a click and collect service from our website and can deliver locally without any issues, but please bear in mind we will be observing the Social Distancing Guidelines.

· If there is anything we can help with please contact us by email on sales@townsendslb.co.uk or phone 01223 315845.

SHOWROOM/SHOP:

· We are operating limited access to the shop, one customer per member of available staff in the shop at a time, with social distancing measures in place for your safety and that of our staff.

· We have ‘zoned’ the shop and ask that one customer and member of staff per ‘zone.’ the exception to this is one parent and children from the same household may be permitted at the same time. We appreciate this may cause some inconvenience to some customers, and we apologise in advance, however, we believe this will help reduce Covid-19 spread.

· Whilst in store, please avoid general browsing, please do not be offended if we try to ascertain your needs at the door prior to you entering the store.

· Please observe social distancing (2 metre distance) where possible to protect both you and our staff. If entering the store, you will be asked to take appropriate safety precautions. Please do not be offended if we ask you to wear PPE or ask for proof or a medical exemption.

· Please avoid using cash where possible; please use contactless payments if you can. This has been raised to £45 on card but Apple / Android pay is not limited.

WORKSHOP:

· We are continuing to book more in-depth workshop jobs (e.g. servicing) and will continue to offer additional ad-hoc minor repairs (e.g. punctures) without booking in if and when time allows.

· While we are running with lower staff levels, and disinfecting bicycles as they come in, our capacity for more in-depth servicing works may reduce. Please enquire in advance to check if we can assist you.

· We are continuing to offer FREE labour and giving workshop priority to NHS staff where necessary for transport.

· If you would like to drop off or collect a bike, please email or phone us in advance of visiting the shop.

ONLINE:

· We are continuing to trade as normal online, but with lower staffing levels some delays may occur in response and deliveries times.

· Please note: We are unable to offer delivery of complete bicycles via 3rd party mail order carriers at present. You can still use click and collect from us in store, after the bicycle has undergone a full pre-delivery inspection, and our own ‘van’ delivery service is still operational in the local area. Please contact us for more details.

If you have any queries, please email: sales@townsendslb.co.uk,

or phone 01223 315845

and we'll do our best to help.

This is the current situation. However, this may change if necessary and we thank you for your continued understanding and support.

Take care, stay safe and protect the NHS.

History

Townsends is the oldest cycle shop in Cambridge. This 4th generation family owned local company was established in 1895 by John Albert Townsend in Cambridge. He made his own brand of "Light Blue Bicycles" in the workshops in Norfolk Street. After the Great War, the original production of Light Blues ceased and Townsends evolved into retailers of other leading brands. In the 1960s, Townsends diversified into Toys (as well as Cycles), and many locals may still recall the Townsends Toys and Cycles shop in Burleigh Street as being a popular destination for many families. In the 1990s, Townsends purchased the old established Ison's Cycles (Established 1893) and re-focused back upon our core bicycle business with the opening of Townsends Light Blue Cycle Centre.
